Follow these simple steps to get your name changed in any document

We all face such situations at certain stages of life when the details of our various documents are found to be incorrect. One of the common problems with people regarding their various types of documents is the incorrect details or mis-spelling in their name. This mostly happens with school students during registration for board or in their mark sheets or while applying for any government schemes. Incorrect or Mis-spelled names may seem a minor problem but it can turn out to be a serious issue if proper attention is not given and if it is not corrected on time. But the correction in the name on related documents can be a tedious and time-consuming task if there is a lack of proper awareness regarding the knowledge of the procedure to change/correct it.

There are mainly two ways for the name change and name correction on documents. The first is through court and the second is through the publishing of public notice in the Gazette of Government. The process of getting your notification published in the Gazette of the Government of India is simple in theory but needs a lot of time and tedious formalities to be done. Therefore, having complete knowledge of the procedure is very important in order to save your time and money and get your work done as soon as possible.

So, I am mentioning the whole process which is as follow:

  1. First, we need to get all the required forms from the office of the Department of Publication. It can also download the forms and Performa of Request letter and affidavit along with Public Notice from the website of the Department of Publication. (http://deptpub.nic.in)

  2. Fill all the forms and prepare the documents and affidavit based on the related Performa. You need the sign of two witnesses on the two copies of the public notices which needed to submit at the office of the Department of Publication.

  3. Get the Affidavit duly notarized with the help of an oath commissioner or notary. You also need to attach a stamp paper of Rs. 10/- along with the affidavit. If the applicant is minor then any of his/her parents need to make the affidavit and Public notice in their own name. Witnesses who need to sign on the notice can be anybody from friends or neighbours but they should be adults of over 18 years.

  4. After completing all the documents, you need to get the public Notice Published in any recognized newspaper in English or in the Language of State in which Gazette is published.

  5. One soft copy of the Public Notice in the form of a CD is also required.

  6. When all these tasks are done, gather all your documents and visit again to the concerned office of Department of Publication with the Request letter, Published Notice in Newspaper, Newspaper Affidavit, CD, and 2 copies of Public Notice with the sign of Witnesses. The Applicant must of present at the time of submission of all these documents for publication of Notice

  7. Pay the requisite fees through Cash or Card.

  8. Congrats! Now your notice of Name Change/Correction will be published in Weekly Ordinary Gazette within 1 or 2 weeks. Check it online through their website (egazette.nic.in).
